Participatory Management of Rural Development Programme
 
PREMISE: Most planners and managers of rural development projects aiming at poverty eradication are used to the top-down system of planning and decision making. However, recent experiences have shown that rural development programmes planned and managed without the active participation of the intended beneficiaries have not yielded the expected results. These programmes are not usually sustained beyond the period of external assistance mainly because the beneficiaries neither believe the projects are their own nor have the capacity to manage them.

OBJECTIVES: This workshop is, therefore, designed to impart in the participants, the culture of participatory planning and management of rural development projects. At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:
 
  • demonstrate adequate understanding of the concepts and principles of participatory rural appraisal (PRA); and
  • utilise various participatory tools in planning and managing of rural developments programmes.

  • Gender issues in participatory Development.
  • Participatory Learning and Rural Appraisal (PLA); Concepts and Principles.
  • PRA Techniques.
  • Community Participation in Rural Development Programmes.
  • Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation.
TRAINING METHODS: Lecturettes, discussions, group exercises, role play and study visits. 
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Planning officers and Project Managers in Ministries and Agencies responsible for agricultural and rural development, water resources and poverty eradication programmes, Officers from the NGOs, CBOs, Community Development Units of the Oil and Gas Companies.
