Mainstreaming Gender Issues into Development Planning
 
PREMISE: Development practitioners have recently realised that their efforts have not yielded the desired results partly due to non-involvement of women in the planning process. Experience has shown that this is partly because the problems and needs of women have not been adequately addressed. This assertion is also butteressed by USAID / Nigeria Strategic Plan (2004-2009) where it stated that, "Nigerian's record on gender issues is weak and in need of improvement" and corroborated by the NEEDs document on the need to mainstream women into development planning as well as the emphasis placed on gender issues in the NSPFS and other agricultural, and rural based project documents. Against this background, there is a need for gender considerations in all aspects of development planning.

OBJECTIVES: This course, therefore, is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for gender considerations in development planning. At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
 
  • describe basic gender concepts;
  • identify gender issues in development planning;
  • collect and analyse gender-specific data; and
  • incorporate gender considerations in development planning.
    CONTENT:
  • Basic gender concepts and issues.
  • Gender sensitization and analysis.
  • Gender-aware planning and control.
  • Sources and quality of gender related data.
  • Methods of collecting gender-disagregated data.
  • Analysis, reporting and presentation of gender statistics.
TRAINING METHODS: Lecturettes, exercises, and group discussions.
